9 - A trip to Kidney Island

Last Friday I took an evening trip to Kidney Island. The island is approximately a 35 minute boat journey from town. There are no current inhabitants, just an old hut remaining from when people used to head out there to cut the Tussac grass.

It was a fantastic evening where I was able to watch Rockhopper penguins up close. Until now I had only really seen them in the distance.

  1. It looks fantastic Mr. Ross! The rock hopper penguins chicks were adorable, I could hardly hear the penguins over you and your friends laughing because a chick kept slipping. I left sick when the mother or father penguin regurgitated up food for the chick, gross! It was amazing that the grass was so tall, it was even more amazing since it was taller than you! Hope you had a great time Mr. Ross. Jenna

    1. Yes the chicks were very cute. They have all left now. I went again last weekend, four weeks after the last trip, and most of them have gone out to sea and will not be back for many months.

Exploring the island did feel a little bit like being on safari.
      All the best!
