2. Cape Pembroke - The eastern most point of the Falkland Islands

This weekends day out was to Cape Pembroke lighthouse. You pick up the (heavy!) key from the museum and let yourself in. I was surprised that only 10 or so people had borrowed the key in the last month so needn't have worried about someone else having borrowed it. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to stand out on the balcony.

It reminded me a bit of Dungeness although there are far less buildings and power stations.

  1. We liked how you got to stand in the light and how massive the key was. We liked it because of all the information you said about the lighthouse. What is your favorite place you have visited? Leona & Leah

    1. Hi Leona and Leah, thanks for your message. My favourite day out so far was the lighthouse, but I have also enjoyed exploring the mountains around the town.

  2. It was amazing to see the size of the key for the lighthouse. It was amazing about how much information you knew about the lighthouse. It was cool to see you inside where the light would have been to. How big do you think the key was? It was cool how you were standing near were old mines were. Were you a little bit scared? We cant wait until the next video. - Jenna & Charlie

    1. Hi Jenna and Charlie, I hope you are well. The key was rather large, it added quite a lot of weight to my backpack that day. I wasn't too scared of the mines, it is quite safe so long as you are on the right side of the fence. But it is a shame that it means you cannot go to some places.

    1. Interesting question Callum! While the key was big and heavy the lock was actually a very simple one and I think could probably have been designed with a much smaller key. So, who knows, maybe it was always just for show.

  4. When you went to the lighthouse that key was so big! Do you miss teaching at Glaitness and the athletics club? We just had a competition recently. Did Jenny show you around? is there a sports center? Were you nervous to leave Orkney?

    1. Hello! I'm not sure who this is because you didn't sign your message. I miss both Glaitness and the athletics club a lot. I have been keeping up through facebook and saw lots of the good results at the open competition on there. I wasn't nervous to leave Orkney, but I was a bit sad as it meant leaving lots of friends for a while.

There is a sports centre where I have been playing badminton every Monday. I also take my new class there for swimming lessons.

  5. I liked seeing the key because it was so big I thought it would be a lot smaller. What do you miss about Orkney?

    1. Hi Archie, I am really enjoying this adventure but here are a few things I miss: walking my dog with my parents, running and coaching at the athletics club, walking down the street past the Cathedral, Scapa beach, my house, and of course Glaitness school. I hope you are well!

  6. we enjoined watching your videos because we liked learning about the different places on the island we thought it was shocking that the big lighthouse is now just a little light. is the whether the same in Orkney? Kirsty and Anna

    1. Hi Kirsty and Anna, thanks for the question. The weather is not so different. The biggest difference is that because I am in the southern hemisphere it is spring here now and the days are getting longer. So that is the opposite to Orkney. Other than that, there is a lot of wind here like Orkney!
I hope you are both well.

  7. We liked the minefield because there's none in Orkney and it is so interesting.
We also liked when you showed us the dolphins to us we wished that we seen the whales.
Are you allowed to go down and see the minefield or is it to not safe?

    1. Hi Abi and Alfie, the minefields are quite interesting I agree. You are not allowed to go and see them, and if you stand and look over the fence you cannot really see anything as the mines are hidden in the ground.
I might do a video on the Falklands war in a few weeks time.
      Best regards, Mr Ross

  8. Hello Mr Ross
When you got to the Falkland islands what was there first thing you did? Was it go to sleep? Do you miss Orkney ice cream? Just asking is there a swimming pool and cinema? We all miss you We especially liked the huge key for the lighthouse. I would like to know if they have any foods that no place else in the world has. Hermione and Callum.C

    1. Hi Hermione and Callum, I hope you are both well and enjoying the new term.

The first thing I did when I got here and dropped off at my house was put on my running shoes and go out for a 20 minute run down to the sea. When I got back to my house 5 people were waiting to check up on me and were wondering where I had got to!

I do miss Orkney ice cream, there is a swimming pool and there is a cinema. I haven't been yet, but I'm hoping to go at Christmas to see the new Star Wars! I might cover food in a future blog.

      Best regards, Mr Ross
